Aim
This one-day training course provides a practical introduction for staff who need to use Makaton in everyday settings. Makaton is a complete language development programme used particularly for those with communication difficulties.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course participants will:
- have practised signing of Stages 1 and 2 in core and additional vocabulary
- be able to use Makaton in everyday settings and set targets for individuals
- gain confidence in using Makaton
- understand how the user of Makaton benefits from its use
- understand the link between sign, symbols and speech
- understand that Makaton is a multimodal approach to communication

Volunteer NowTraining/AdviceThis course is aimed at individuals who recruit, manage or supervise staff and volunteers working with children and/or adults. It will examine the procedures that need to be put in place for effective recruitment and selection of staff and volunteers including requirements under the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (NI) Order, the current and former definitions of regulated activity and how to exercise careful judgement when assessing information on an Access NI Disclosure Certificate. It will also look at the procedures required for the effective management of staff and volunteers including induction and training, breach of code of behaviour and referral to the Disclosure and Barring Service.- - -
