NIOGN, with the support of the PB Network, Involve, the Democratic Society and Building Change Trust, will host a mock participatory budgeting exercise.
Participatory Budgeting (PB) is a process of democratic decision‐making, in which ordinary people decide how to allocate part of a public budget. A PB simulation will be undertaken using a simple scenario, whereby attendees will determine how Belfast City Council’s Budget could be spent. While PB has been used extensively in other parts of the UK, particularly Scotland, and around the world, the concept has yet to be adopted in Northern Ireland. In the context of recent local government reforms, it is an opportune moment to trial this new, innovative and engaging approach to budgeting.
