The controversy that was triggered by the publication of DSM5 is a sign of a paradigm under threat. Lucy Johnstone will outline the national and international context to the British Psychological Society Division of Clinical Psychology’s Position Statement on Classification (2013), which calls for systems of categorisation that are not based on a ‘disease’ model. She will argue that we already have viable alternatives to psychiatric diagnosis which, in essence, are about listening to people’s stories. She will discuss the growing UK interest in psychological formulation as one alternative to psychiatric diagnosis, and will describe a number of projects based on these principles which are helping to bring about culture change within mental health services.
