ACTION CANCER - Annual Men’s Health Campaign

To raise awareness of general health among men and male specific cancers, Action Cancer delivers an annual Action Man Campaign. This year we are offering additional Mens Health Checks on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays in Action Cancer House.

Every year in Northern Ireland there are approximately 4,000 men diagnosed with cancer - that’s 11 men every day. Although men are 16% more likely to develop cancer than women, they are 40% more likely to die from the disease. This has been attributed to poor lifestyle choices, such as eating an unhealthy diet, taking less exercise and a reluctance to discuss personal health matters. Research indicates that men will sometimes wait up to two years before consulting a doctor and are less likely to do so than women. By not monitoring their health, men have a higher chance of not detecting cancer or other serious conditions at an early and, hopefully, more treatable stage.

Action Cancer’s M.O.T. health checks are available for men aged 16+ and involve a number of assessments including cholesterol, blood glucose, body composition, blood pressure, facial skin analysis and peak flow measurements. Clients can select four of the six available health checks according to their needs and will receive all results during the health check appointment.

Information is also provided on the signs and symptoms of gender specific cancers and the importance of self-examination. Health and lifestyle advice is discussed including reducing alcohol intake, healthy eating and being physically active.
