The Importance of the Community & Voluntary Sector in a Divided World

On Monday 20th March Holywell Trust will be hosting a City Centre Forum on the theme ‘The Importance of the Community & Voluntary Sector in a Divided World’. The event will be held at the HOLYWELL – DiverseCity Community Partnership building and is open for all to attend.

The rise of far-right politics in Europe and the United States has left many people understandably fearful for the future. The rise of far-right, signified by Donald Trump and Brexit especially, seems positioned to fundamentally curtail hard-won rights, freedoms, and economic security. But at the same time, we are witnessing the emergence of a new politics of activism. From Standing Rock to Apollo House to Women’s March on Washington and other cities around the world, citizens seem to be increasingly energised and determined to resist the current political climate and demand a better future.

How do we, in the North West, best understand the rise of far-right politics? What does it mean for us? What impact will it have? And what can we do about it, here, in the places where we live and work and socialise, in the communities we call home? How can we make connections between what is happening where we live and what is happening in the world around us? What role for the community and voluntary sector in the North West, how can they best support and resource global and local progressive movements?

At this event, we will hear from a variety of speakers concerning these deeply important questions. Our speakers will speak both globally and locally, sharing their thoughts, insights, and analyses on how to understand the new political climate, and how to mobilise for a better future.

It would be great if you could let us know if you are planning to attend. We look forward to seeing you at the event.
