Body Wisdom dance performance from those aged 50 and over

Echo Echo Dance Theatre Company

Cost: £5

Echo Echo Dance Theatre Company has once again collaborated with The Worker’s Educational Association, to work with women aged over 50 to create and perform an original dance piece for performances in The Millennium Forum on 9th and 10th March.

The ‘Body Wisdom’ group will perform ‘Views from the Hill’ - a dance piece that draws on the deep wisdom embedded in the experienced physicality of older people. It is inspired by the participant’s memories of visits to Grianan of Aileach.

The dancers will be accompanied by a specially commissioned music score, written and performed by Christopher Norby, with violin from Colin Norrby.

As part of the WEA’s Learning Age Project, Artistic Director of Echo Echo Steve Batts has been teaching the Body Wisdom dance programme for older people for three years. The programme was extended through funding from the BBC Performing Arts Fund.

Steve Batts said:

"I like to work with older people. I am in my fifties and although I enjoy working with young athletic people, as an older dancer-choreographer I find my heart more often touched by sharing the movement world of people who have age and experience in their bodies. I am very excited about the opportunity to follow up the beautiful Body Wisdom project that I led earlier in 2010 and 2011."

Learning Age Project Development Officer with Worker’s Educational Association, Sinead Devine said:

“The Learning Age Project was delighted to receive new funding from the BBC Performing Arts Fund to develop this new piece with Body Wisdom and to work in partnership with Echo Echo once more.  Body Wisdom is very unique in that it offers older people, some of whom have never danced before the opportunity to train with a professional dance company and to create a new piece of dance to performance level, which is a wonderful achievement. The work has been evolving over the past few months and I am really looking forward to the final performances.”

Views from the Hill performances will take place on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th March at 8pm in The Millennium Forum Studio. Tickets are £5 and available at the box office on 028 7126 4455. You can visit www.echoechodance.com for more information.

The Body Wisdom project is kindly supported by the BBC Performing Arts Fund, The Atlantic Philanthropies and The Arts Council of Northern Ireland.
