The 3 Day First Aid at Work course provides the comprehensive set of practical skills needed to become a confident first aider at work, giving the successful participant both the ability and knowledge to deal with first aid emergencies.

Who should attend:

All employees who wish to become qualified First Aiders and are easily accessible to other employees in the workplace.

Participants are required to pass practical and oral assessments and after successful completion of the course will be presented with a certificate of all-round competence which is valid for three years.

As specified in ACOP – First Aid at Work Regulations (N.I) 2000; the selection of first-aiders depends on a number of factors, including an individual’s:

  • Reliability, disposition and communication skills;
  • Aptitude and ability to absorb new knowledge and learn new skills
  • Ability to cope with stressful and physically demanding emergency procedure
  • Normal duties. These should be such that they may be left to go immediately and rapidly to an emergency.Practice.

The subjects covered during this course are as specified by the Health and Safety Regulations (First-Aid) in Northern Ireland, 1982 Approved Code of 

Included in the syllabus are;

  • Resuscitation , Treatment and control of bleeding
  • Treatment of shock , Management of the unconscious casualty
  • Contents of first - aid boxes and their use, Purchasing first - aid supplies
  • Transport of casualties and Recognition of illness
  • Treatment of injuries to bones, muscles and joints
  • Treatment of minor injuries, treatment of burns and scalds
  • Eye irrigation , Poisons
  • Simple record keeping
  • Personal hygiene in treating wounds: reference to Hep.B and A.I.D.S. with regard to first aiders Communication and delegation in an emergency

Certification:

On completion of training and if successful in all components of assessment (including written and practical examinations) each student will be issued with a certificate of competency in regard to their ability to deal safely and effectively with first aid emergencies in the workplace.

The certificate for First Aid At work is valid for 3 years from date of issue and update training (2 days duration) must be completed before date of expiry of current certification or the full 3 day course will have to be attended again.

HSENI strongly recommends that first aiders undertake annual refresher training within any 3 years certification period of First Aid At work or Emergency First Aid at Work but this is currently left very much to the discretion of the employer.

Health Matters staff will endeavour to remind all our clients of pending expiry date of certification at least 8 weeks prior to expiry date using the email address provided at booking.
